Project management at the University of Würzburg:
Expertise: Evaluation of the professional offers of the city of Magdeburg in the fight against violence against women and children - various projects in the Federal Republic of Germany
On behalf of the mayor of the city of Magdeburg, basic data on the frequency of various forms of domestic violence against women and children was to be obtained and their relevance for the degree and organisation of assistance offers evaluated.
Aim and procedure
The frequency of domestic violence was estimated, based on the results of the study of Sachsen-Anhalt. Furthermore, experts were interviewed in order to describe the offers of the city of Magdeburg for women having experienced violence. From the experts it was to be further assessed, to what extent the available offers fulfilled the needs of female victims of domestic violence.
In Magdeburg there exists the possibility of both outpatient and in-patient advice centres for women and children victims of violence. According to statements by the interviewees, several women could, however, not be reached. An especial emphasis should be placed on an intensified public effort to reach this group of people and to enable long-term prevention.
After a stay in a home for battered women, in Magdeburg the women have the possibility of finding a suitable apartment within a short space of time. Nevertheless, on account of the severe consequences of - oftentimes long-standing - violence, parallel aid for the women and children is crucial. This enables the women to free themselves from existing violent relationships in the long-term. To accomplish this, a continuity and sufficient professional advice are needed, which can ultimately be provided only by permanent staff in the area of counselling for women.
Directly after the therapeutic stay (as foreseen by the current concept of the II. accommodation form), intensified aid with the possibility of accommodation is a necessity for women with serious traumata - particularly at night. At this time, this is lacking in Magdeburg. Similarly, it is difficult to find first professional aid in emergency situations, especially during the night hours. Scenarios to meet this need are concretely developed.
