Effects of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA)
Colonic carcinogenesis
Inflammatory bowel disease
Barrier function of the gut

Results:
Effects of short-chain fatty acids:
- reduced proliferation, enhanced differentiation, and induced apoptosis in colon cancer cells
- Effects on gene expression (cell cycle regulators p21 and PCNA, apoptosis related genes of the BCL-2 family, cell adhesion molecules ICAM and VCAM, angioneogenesis factor VEGF
- Antiinflammatory effects of SCFA by inhibition of the NFkappaB signal transduction kaskade
- Upregulation of the antibacterial peptide LL-37 by SCFA

Establishment of innovative cell culture systems (primary carcinoma cells, adenoma cells)

Cytogenetic and molecular genetic characterization of cells as indicators of prognosis after tumor resection (ICCR-Working group on colorectal cancer)
