Research foci (and basic equipment-based research projects):
Studies in biocompatibility on alloplastic ossicular replacement prostheses. The main interest is in titanium and titanium alloys with different surface modifications and the acceptance in an animal model (rabbit) and the adsorption of proteins towards the extracellular matrix. In addition histological studies are performed in explanted ossicular replacement prostheses from human middle ears.

Histologic studies show the material's surface covered with regular mucosa and submucosal connective tissue. An inflammatory reaction was seen in the early postoperative stage in the animal study and in chronic middle ear disease in humans. High cylindrical epithelium with ciliated and goblet cells was detected. In no cases there were round cells adjacent to the biomaterial's surface. The results show good acceptance of titanium in the animal model as in human application as well.
