Title:
Effects and mechanisms of psychotherapy in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

Abstract:

1. Objective

The multicentre network being funded in the context of the BMBF?s program on psychotherapy research is investigating effects and mechanisms of psychotherapy in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults.

2. Work plan

Single projects are focussing on the investigation of the efficacy of psychotherapy, stimulant medication, a combination of both and a control condition (placebo) for the treatment of ADHD in adults, on the investigation of the enhancement of the efficacy of parent training for children?s ADHD by a precedent treatment of ADHD in affected mothers and on the study of associations between neurobiological markers and therapy response. The network makes use of well established structures for treatment and research on ADHD at the different sites. Existing resources will further be extended directly leading to an extension of the clinical care offered to ADHD patients.

Single projects:

·       Project C1: Evaluation of efficacy and effectiveness of a structured disorder specific psychotherapy in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults - The first randomized multicentre study?;
Projektleitung: Dr. Alexandra Philipsen, Universitätsklinikum Freiburg;

·        Project  C2: Does the treatment of maternal ADHD enhance the effectiveness of parent management training for children's ADHD?
Projektleitung: Prof. Dr. Andreas Warnke, Universitätsklinikum Würzburg;

·        Project  D1: Molecular imaging might predict therapeutic response in adult patients with ADHD. A pilot multimodal neuroimaging study;
Projektleitung: PD Dr. Tebartz van Elst, Universitätsklinikum Freiburg;

·        Project  D2: The impact of genetic variation on molecular imaging, habituation, and efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy in adult ADHD;
Projektleitung: Prof. Dr. Klaus-Peter Lesch, Universitätsklinikum Würzburg.

3. Utilisation

Results are supposed to strengthen the evidence base of the treatment of ADHD, to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of therapeutic change and to allow the prediction of therapy response.
