Abstract:
Inactivation of the CNTF gene leads to progressive degeneration of motoneurons. We have investigated, whether the loss of motoneurons is preceded by axonal changes. In cooperation with Dr. Gatzinsky, University of Uppsala, we could demonstrate that the structure of paranodal networks is changed during early stages of the degenerative process in CNTF-/- mice. These changes indicate that alteration in the signalling between Schwann cells and axons plays a crucial role in the initiation of the disease in CNTF-/- mice.
