The aim of this project was to compare neurophysiological and neurohistological studies in vivo and in vitro currently performed by scientists of the SFB 353 in Würzburg and Erlangen and in the laboratory of Profs. Kumazawa and Mizumura, dealing with the peripheral mechanisms of nociception. The project included electrophysiological studies with inflammatory mediators and other algogenic substances involved in signal transduction as well as light and electron microscopic immunohistochemical examinations of the neuropeptide content of nociceptors in different tissues of varying species.
