Immunological Correlates of Protection from HIV Infection and Disease
Project management at the University of Würzburg:
HIV disease does not progress in a small subpopulation of HIV-infected individuals despite infection for several years. An important correlate of protection from disease progression is the presence of a particularly vigorous HIV-specific T helper cell immune response. In this study a group of HIV-infected individuals was identified that exhibits strong proliferative responses to the HIV Gag protein. Proliferative responses were detected in both treated and untreated individuals. A negative correlation between proliferative activity and virus load was observed in untreated individuals. Several HIV Gag T helper cell epitopes were characterized.
