Effect of Atorvastatin in the reduction of oxidative stress in mammalian cells.
Project management at the University of Würzburg:
Statins are of proven benefit in the prevention and therapy of diabetic and non-diabetic nephropathy as well as cardiovascular diseases. The study is designed to investigate the effects of Atorvastatin vs. placebo on advanced glycation endproduct (AGE)-induced dysfunctions of mammalian cells (LLC-PK1 cells, Hep-G2 cells and CaCo-2 cells), with special regard to DNA damage. It has been demonstrated that statins, via their pleiotropic effects, are able to decrease oxidative stress and inflammation in endothelial cells. A mechanism through interference with the AGE-Receptor (RAGE) system is conceivable.
