Third-party-funded project

Pulmonary Inflammation and Fibrosis in the Pathogenesis of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

The bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) of preterm infants has a multifactorial etiology, and the predisposing risk factors of lung injury are pulmonary immaturity, oxygen toxicity, barotrauma and infections. These factors induce an inflammatory response in the airways and the pulmonary tissue which is associated with early signs of tissue repair and pulmonary fibrosis. The sequence and interaction between inflammation and fibrosis is only partly understood and various aspects of these pathogenetic events will be evaluated in the current project.
