Third-party-funded project

Pulmonary fibrosis following 131I-therapy of thyroid cancer in children: incidence and functional consequences.

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

Following the Chernobyl accident, the incidence of thyroid carcinoma has increased considerably in children and adolescents in Belorussia. After thyroidetomy many of these patients are seen in the department of nuclear medicine in Würzburg for 131I-therapy. Some of them develop pulmonary fibrosis in the course of therapy. The aim of this collaborative longitudinal study is to establish criteria which allow to identify patients at risk. Furthermore, we would like to determine the sensitivity and specificity of different methods to detect and follow-up pulmonary fibrosis such as lung function testing, exercise testing, and CT-scan of the lungs.
