Ventilation-perfusion-MRI in cystic fibrosis

Increasing destruction of lung tissue in cystic fibrosis (CF) is the leading cause of death in his condition. Standard techniques to monitor pulmonary destruction either provide images of the pathologic-anatomical situation or yield global measures of lung function. Only the ventilation-perfusion scintigraphy allows to identify parts within the lung with impaired function. Recently, a new MRI-based method has been developed which allows to obtain images of pulmonary ventilation and perfusion with relatively high spatial resolution and is free of radiation. The objectives of this study are to adapt the methodology of the ventilation-perfusion MRI for CF-patients and to determine the validity and reliability of this method.
