Research foci (and basic equipment-based research projects):
The burden of infectious diseases and the influence of vaccination programs in children and adolescents are investigated by epidemiological studies. (focus: pneumococci, influenza, RSV and other viral respiratory infections). Surveillance of pathogens is conducted using different microbiological and virological procedures, including Multiplex-PCR. Clinical data of patients are collected through regional and national networks of paediatric practices and children hospitals. In cooperation with the Institutes of Virology in Würzburg and Jena, the Institute of Hygiene and Microbiology in Würzburg and national microbiological reference centers (Würzburg, Aachen) pathogens are identified and subtyped. The adaptation of pathogens as a consequence of vaccination programs is investigated, for example pneumococcal serotype replacement in pleural empyema.
