Third-party-funded project

Characterization of functionally relevant epitopes on the ectodomain of the 180 kD bullous pemphigoid autoantigen (BP180/type XVII collagen)

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

In addition to the binding of autoantibodies, the inflitration of inflammatory cells and the release of various inflammatory mediators, including interleukin 6 and 8, is necessary for blister formation in bullous pemphigoid. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time that keratinocytes, by secreting interleukin 6 and 8 upon stimulation with patients autoantibodies, actively contribute to the inflammatory process finally leading to blister formation in bullous pemphigoid.
