Abstract:
During the last years an increasing number of cases with acquired von Willebrand disease (vWD) could be observed in patients with cardiovascular diseases (e.g. aortic valve sclerosis or stenosis, arteriosclerosis, pulmonary artery hypertension). In a large number of investigations partly considerable bleeding complications could be seen in affected patients, possibly due to a loss of high molecular weight von Willebrand multimers in areas of high bloodstream velocity. We now want to investigate, whether a loss of high molecular weight von Willebrand multimers could cause an increased perioperative blood loss in orthopedic patients. Furthermore we will focus our interest on pre-OP FVIII levels and their influence on blood loss.
