Research foci (and basic equipment-based research projects):
Main points in research and teaching are functional and structural materials for applications in the oral cavity, in hard and soft tissue as well as in contact with blood. Correlation mechanisms between components of the biological environment and surfaces of materials are investigated by use of scientifical methods, generating causality between solid body physical characteristics of the material and molecular biological components of the extracellular matrix fluids.

Developments of materials were made based on calcium phosphates being applicable for bone cements in the maxillofacial region, as well as drug delievery systems. Furthermore the magnetic properties of ceramic materials are fitted to those of the tissue. Thus components and implants respectively don´t lead to artefacts or lost of signals in the environment of the body.

Results:
The properties of the interface between material´s surface and biological system determe the reactions of the organism to in implants. The interface is influenced by the mechanical structure of the surface, the composition of the material´s surface, the electronical structure as well as reactions with exchange of charge carrierspassing through the interface.

The setting characteristics of hydroxyapatite cement were improved for application. Powder mixtures were prepared with reproducible setting properties and clinically demanded mechanical strenghts.
