Third-party-funded project

Protect Cultural Heritage, Build confidence, Spread broad effect: Structure of a dual Joint Master Program Museum Studies Helwan-Würzburg

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

Since the change of the millennium, the Egyptian department of antiquities has set up large museum projects nationwide that encompass their cultural heritage from ancient to Islamic times. However, it has not been possible for them to cover the rising demand in well-educated museum personnel. In order to bridge this gap, the Helwan University (HU) in Cairo has established the MA Museum Studies. Additionally, they now want to start a dual Joint Master Program Museum Studies in cooperation with the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg (JMU), in order to achieve a connection to the international developments in the museum sector. This Masters program would complement the MA Heritage Conservation and Site Management from HU and BTU Cottbus, which is required by the DAAD; at the same time a uniquely structured program, Center of Heritage and Museum Studies, would be created in the Arab world.

The new international MA program will be conducted as an equal university partnership with student and lecturer exchanges. The Deutsches Archäologisches Institut of Cairo will be supporting the venture by offering the students the opportunity to participate in projects (site museums). Besides the transfer of knowledge and making connections through communal semesters, the German-Egyptian cooperation of museologists and Egyptologists encourages tourism and thereby helps the economy by developing museums dedicated to Egyptian history. Innovative ideas, fields und museum presentation forms are however developed so that the museums can aim to attract more of their native population. In the process the graduates can insure a broader acceptance for the protection and care of important cultural heritage sites. This project is based on the fundamental goals: Protect cultural heritage, build confidence, spread broad effect and makes an important contribution to the intellectual and cultural development and the stabilization of the precarious conditions of the post-revolutionary phase of Egypt.
