Conference: The things and the signs. Dimensions of the 'realistic' in 19th century narrative literature

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

There is no other definition of a literary epoch that causes so many difficulties than the so-called 'realism". What does that self-presence of the represented things mean that ought to be achieved by making invisible the semiotic level of representation? Coming from Adalbert Stifters attitude of an 'Ehrfurcht vor den Dingen' with its narrative retention, the conference is intended to point out the tensions between 'realism' and abstraction at further authors of this period. In this way, the conference aims at a new, more differentiated image of literary 'realism'.

Projekt period: from 10.2006 to 10.2006
