Dating of the high-pressure metamorphism in the Austroalpine basement of the Schobergruppe (Austria) by electron-microprobe analyses of monazite.

Abstract:
In the Schobergruppe to the south of the Tauern Window, high-pressure metamorphic rocks underwent an amphibolite-facies overprinting. The ages of these metamorphic events are in discussion. Rb-Sr mica and Sm-Nd garnet data favour at least an early-Alpine overprinting of the high-pressure rocks. The elements Th, U and Pb in monazite in metapelites will be analysed by the electron microprobe. This allows to estimate absolute radiometric ages of the monazite and to conclude to minimum age of the amphibolite-facies metamorphic event. The minimum age of the precedent high-pressure event – Variscan or early-Alpine – is of crucial importance for the understanding of the Alpine orogeny.
