improvement of management processes in the context of goal-setting theories
Project management at the University of Würzburg:
On the one hand goal setting is an essential issue in many private and public organizations, becoming more and more important, on the other hand psychological research provides a tremendous variety of empirical findings and useful advice to foster effecitve goal setting. Especially the translation of goals into action is more than a matter of strong will and conscientiousness.
The aim of our resarch project is to learn more about the translation of goals into action. This means to expand our knowledge about the different variables of goal setting processes, which determine the effectiveness of goal attainment. Empirical evidence indicates that implementation intentions (?If situation Y arises, then I will initiate goal-directed behavior Z to achieve the desired aim X!?) facilitate the achievement of goals. We try to find out, what makes implementation intentions successful and what can be done to optimize such implementation intentions.
The research project is realized in cooperation with a private company with the purpose to study goal setting processes in a natural setting. It would be a fruitful contribution to the application of psychological research in working context to develop guidelines on effective goal pursuit for members of private and public organizations.
