Title:
Conditions of upward school track changes among migrant students

Participating scientists:

Abstract:
Migrant students in Germany still score lower in school grades compared to students of German origin. Reasons for these differences are lower languae skills in German and less socio-economic resources of the students' family. On the other hand, if it is controlled for SES, migrant students more often change to higher school tracks than German students. The project focuses on this phenomen and tries to line out the reasosns for this. It is assumed that differences in motivation to learn, academic self-concept and educational aspirations may explain partly, why migrant students seem to be more succesfull in upward mobility than comparable German chums.
To verify these assumptions, two empirical strategies are to be chosen. The first one is to reanalyse PISA 2003-data to compare migrant students with low and high rates on motivation, self-concept and aspirations to see wether the first group is more likely to change to a higher school track. The second is to conduct a longitudinal study with migrant students from 6th to 7th grade and analyse, if school track changes over time are the result of higher motivational etc attitudes.
