Title:
Taught knowledge and knowledge of teaching in primary school wall charts during the Wilhelmian Empire

Abstract:
The project uses wall charts as resources of the history of schooling
to analyze the visual concretion of the taught knowledge for primary education in the historical
context of the 19th century. The focus is on the embedded type of knowledge that is specific for
the pictorial sort of medium, the subject of "Anschauungsunterricht" (primary Social and Scientific Education) and
the age of the target group. In addition it is the aim to explore the knowledge of teaching by analyzing the
guidelines concerning the use of the wall chart series. The corpus of the study contains the most common wall
charts for visual instruction in the Wilhelmian Empire from 1871 to 1918.
