Research foci (and basic equipment-based research projects):
1. Comparative genomics of human pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria.
2. Functional analysis of virulence genes and their products.
3. Development of diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive tools for bacterial infectious diseases.
These studies are performed with the following pathogenic bacteria:
Section 1: Gram-positive Cocci:
- Staphylococci
- Pneumococci
- Streptococci
- Enterococci
Section 2: Intracellular bacteria:
- Listeria
- Mycobacteria
- Chlamydia
- Legionella
Section 3: Gram-negative bacteria:
- Helicobacter pylori
- Neisseria
- Enterobacteriaceae
- Bordetella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Section 4: Diagnostic Microarrays
Results:
The sequencing of genomes of the following bacteria are done:
DNA microarrays are produced for
Listeria ivanovii (University of Würzburg in cooperation with Institut Pasteur and University of Gießen),
Listeria grayi (University of Würzburg in cooperation with Institut Pasteur and University of Gießen),
Listeria welshimeri (University of Gießen and University of Würzburg),
Listeria seeligeri (University of Gießen and University of Würzburg),
Streptococcus mitis (University of Kaiserslautern),
Staphylococcus carnosus (University of Tübingen),
Bordetella petrii (University of Würzburg with GBF Braunschweig and FU Berlin),
Chlamydia-like Endosymbiont (University of München with MWG Ebersberg and MPI Berlin),
Neisseria meningitidis (apathogenic strains) (University of Würzburg with MWG Ebersberg),
Equipment:
Software for Bioinformatics;
Spotter and Scanner for the central development of DNA-microarrays;
Sequencer for DNA-sequencing.
