Third-party-funded project

Electron microsopic investigation of animal and plant cells in collaboration with other scientists of the University of Würzburg

Project management at the University of Würzburg:

Participating scientists:

In collaboration with Prof. Koeppsel we have controlled the purity of membrane fractions and made quantitative measurements of the surface of microvilli in the plasma membrane (Valentin et al., 2000). In collaboration with Prof. Zimmermann the xylem elements of the resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia have been analysed in desiccated and wet plants. It was detected that the vessels contain a unique lipid lining (Wagner et al., 2000). In collaboration with Prof. Scheller glucocorticoid hormone recepors have been immunolocalized at the electron microscopical level in mitochondria (Scheller et al., 2000). Special adaptations of the xyleme cells in the resurrection plant Chamaegigas could be detected by scanning electron microscopy (Schiller et al., 1999). These structures serve to prevent irreversible deflation of the vascular bundles in spite of extreme desiccation.

Key words:
