Expression and modifications of HMGN1/N2 proteins in tumors

Several investigations show that HMG proteins play a role in normal cellular growth and differentiation as well as in neoplastic transformation of cells. This project is aimed to investigate whether altered expression of HMGN1/N2 genes influences the proliferation of normal cells and tumor cells. The involvement of phosphorylation and acetylation will be analyzed. In collaboration with other members of this graduate program the expression and modifications of HMGN1 and HMGN2 will be analyzed in various tumor cell lines and tissues. With this investigations we further want to find out, whether these proteins are overexpressed in certain tumors. In additional experiments we will manipulate the expression of HMGN1/N2 proteins (antisense strategies; transfection of cells with expression vectors) and will investigate the consequences for cell growth.
