Photochemistry of Borlylene Complexes

Abstract:
In order to gain a better understanding of the chemical properties of the transition metal-bound borylene unit, a number of different borylene compounds need to be investigated. Besides the salt elimination reactions, which are limited to group VI and VIII transition metal complexes, another promising synthetic route to borylenes is the borylene transfer by photochemical activation. It has so far been possible to transfer the borylene group from the known complexes [(OC)5M{BN(SiMe3)}] (M = Cr, W) to rhenium and vanadium complexes. Extending this methodology to other transition metal acceptors would allow the investigation of different bonding situations within the new compounds. The borylene transfer, so far accomplished only to Lewis bases, should also be attempted to Lewis acids, especially to main group element (like B, Al or Ga) containing compounds, since compounds featuring a bond between a borylene unit and a main group Lewis acid have thus far not been reported. In order to find suitable acceptor substrates, it is important to explore the mechanism of the photochemical transfer. Therefore selective activation of the borylene source or the borylene acceptor will be attempted by using monochromatic UV light.
