Marine sponges, fungi and bacteria are known to produce a broad variety of biologically active secondary metabolites, a rich, but still untapped source of novel leads for the development of new pharmaceutics. Together with other scientist, we try to take advantage of this valuable potential of novel low-molecular natural products. Employing our LC triad consisting of the coupling techniques HPLC-NMR, HPLC-MS, and the HPLC-CD hyphenation in combination with quantum chemical CD calculations, we aim at a rapid and efficient metabolic profiling of crude extracts for new compounds, including the elucidation of their constitutions and relative and absolute configurations. Biological activities of extracts and isolated pure compounds are investigated by special test systems, i.a., for antitumor, antibacterial, or antiinflammatory properties. Pharmacologically active novel natural products constitute attractive goals for totalsynthesis.
