Abstract:
Together with other scientists, we started to investigate the metabolic profile of marine sponges and associated microorganisms like fungi and bacteria applying our LC triad HPLC-NMR-MS/MS-CD. Besides isolation and structural elucidation of the full 3-dimensional structure of novel bioactive secondary metabolites, we also used modern, 'non-invasive' NMR imaging methods to monitor an 'NMR image' of the interior of a living sponge, based on the water distribution in the ensemble of the object. The 'picture' taken non-destructively shows the sponge inhabited (and thus 'mobilized') by a hermit-crab with its snail-shell.
