Matal-ions controlled Polymerization of Photoluminescent Perylene Bisimide Dyes

Through coordination interactions between metal ions and with two terpyridine-receptor groups substituted perylene bisimide dyes photoluminescent supramolecular polymers are produced. NMR and optical spectroscopic as well as microtitration calorimetric methods are applied to determine the thermodynamic data for the bonding strength between metal ions and terpyridine-receptor groups, in order to identify matal ions and conditions (temperature, solvents) under which the polymerization proceeds reversibly. On the basis of enthalpies ∆H and ∆G coordination polymers and copolymers can be prepared which contain perylene bisimides with different spectral properties. The bisimides are incorporated either statistically or in blocks. For the elucidation of polymer properties, particularly the gel-permeation chromatography will be applied because this method can be advantageously used in different solvents and at higher temperatures. Finally, by means of absorption and emission spectroscopy the photophysical features of the polymers will be assessed, whereby especially also those polymers will be investigated which contain different perylene units and/or metal ions.
