Research foci (and basic equipment-based research projects):
To determine the absolute configuration of natural compounds novel circular dichroism (CD) methods are developed. Analytic developments are running in the area of stable isotope analysis (IRMS) (cf. 'flavour science' with the project 'authenticity').

Using the CD 'exciton chirality' method, among others, the absolute configuration of chiral carboxylic groups, fumonisins, alpha-aryl-substituted alcohols as well as 2- and 3-sulfanyl alkanols was determined. Multielement techniques were established for capillary gas chromatographic (HRGC) coupled stable isotope analysis (HRGC-IRMS).

The instrumentation comprises among others HRGC, dynamic headspace-HRGC, HRGC-SCD, HRGC-MS, SPE-HRGC-MS, HRGC-IRMS, HPLC, HPLC-DAD, HPLC-ELSD, as well as HPLC-MS/MS and HPLC-NMR. For configurational studies MDGC, MDGC-MS and CD spectroscopy are well established. Quantifications are performed routinely by HRGC-MS and HPLC-MS/MS using preferably isotope dilution analysis.
