Experimental and theoretical investigations of the structure and properties of zwitterionic maingroup organometallic compounds

The aim of the project was to synthesise pi-electron systems that are polarised by positively and negatively charged substituents. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of these zwitterionic chromophores were investigated. We could show that the zwitterions have significantly higher quadratic hyperpolarisabilities while their absorption maxima are shifted to higher energies than their classical analogues with conventional donor and acceptor substituents.
