Spectroscopy and Dynamics of Hydrocarbon Radicals and Carbenes
Project management at the University of Würzburg:
The goals of this project are the elucidation of the electronic structure of hydrocarbon radicals and carbenes, their photochemistry and reaction dynamics, and measurements of the rates of their unimolecular reactions. All experiments are carried out in molecular beams in order to study the intrinsic properties of these reactive species and to avoid collisions. We want to answer the following questions:
Where are the excited electronic states located?
What are the ionisation energies?
What products are formed upon unimolecular dissociation?
What is the reaction mechanism?
What are the time scales for the various processes?
How is the excess energy distributed onto the product degrees of freedom?
Our research is motivated by the importance of radicals in combustion processes and by the fact that they are excellent models to study chemical dynamics in general
