Immunohistochmical localization of neuropeptide receptors: plasticity during inflammation

Many evidences exist that neuropeptides, synthetized in neurons of the peripheral and central nervous system, are involved in the processing of nocicieptive information as well as in the development of inflammation. To study their function in more detail, the localization and distribution of their receptors were investigated by light and electron microscopical methods. The identification of the target cells bearing the receptors helped to clarify the mechanisms in which plasmaextravasation, being one neurogenic component of inflammation, (indirect) activation and sensitization of peripheral nerve fibers, caused by neuropeptides, takes place.
