Pro-nociceptive mechanisms in the inflamed knee joint of the rat

Abstract:
The neuropeptide substance P is released from primary afferents in the
course of an inflammation. It sensitizes high threshold articular afferents
called nociceptors. To study which type of membrane receptor is involved
in this effect and if it is a direct or indirect action (e.g. via mast
cells), single fiber recordings were performed. The NK1 receptor seems to
play an important role in the mechanosensitization of the articular
afferents.
