Magnetic resonance study of anatomy, function and perfusion of the human heart

Abstract:
Initially, the use of magnetic resonance imaging for the assessment of cardiac anatomy, function, and perfusion was studied experimentally. In the years 1999-2001, several MR methods and experimental protocols were applied to volunteers and patients. Cardiac functional examination was standardized and used for follow-up studies in patients with aortic valve stenosis before and after surgical valve replacement as well as in patients after myocardial infarction and revascularization. Viability studies were performed by using contrast enhanced MR imaging techniques, i.e. first-pass perfusion, late enhancement, as well
as by analysis of wall motion during dobutamine stress. Additionally, initial studies or myocardial perfusion in patients with coronary artery disease were performed at rest und during adenosine stress. Furthermore, first experiences were gained with an intravascular contrast agent for the assessment of myocardial perfusion and regional blood volume. MR coronary angiography techniques during free breathing and breathholding were compared with conventional coronary angiography. Current study focus is the improvement of existing MR techniques concerning temporal and spatial resolution and the reduction of acquisition time. Real-time and 3D imaging techniques will be integrated into cardiac examination. Aim of further study is the development of an integrated cardiac examination protocol that allows for global examination of the human heart within a reasonable examination time.
