Pathophysiological and possible therapeutic role of reactive nitric oxide and oxide species for acute myocardial ischemia-reperfusion and chronic heart failure

Abstract:
Reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially superoxide (O2-) and peroxide (H2O2), are thought to play an important role during acute myocardial ischemia and chronic heart failure, also due to their interaction with nitric oxide (NO) resulting in reactive nitric oxide species (RNS). This project investigated nitration, RNS and ROS during acute myocardial ischemia and chronic heart failure. With the appointment of the project leader as chaiman of the department of pharmacologhy at the Justus-Liebig university of Giessen, the project also moved to Giessen in 2001 and was integrated into the SFB 547 "Cardiopulmonary vasculature". Therefore, the direction of the project moved from the cardiac to the vascular system.
